The short answer
Ask what was identified, where it was identified and by whom. The actual system may include different materials and several generations of work.
Replace the assumption with a question
A year-built range may motivate a records search, but it is not a material identification. Ask what the existing report actually describes and whether the writer identified branch circuits, feeders or something else. Keep uncertainty explicit until a qualified professional clarifies the actual system.
Do not gather evidence through unsafe access
Use existing documents and observations already made in normal use. Do not open devices or equipment to photograph a conductor or read a hidden mark. Ask the electrical professional what identification work is appropriate and what limits will be recorded.
Record a mixed system accurately
A property may have several generations of work. Ask the report to define which locations and systems were assessed instead of attaching one label to the whole house. The passport is organized around scope and records so later work can be compared with that original description.
Bring the records into the Calgary process
For a Calgary property, confirm proposed electrical work and applicable permits with the City and a qualified contractor. Keep Ontario ESA technical background separate from Alberta authority requirements. Use the original scope, report dates and location list when asking for further review. Where the purpose is insurance or a transaction, give the actual documents to the appropriate adviser and record any unresolved question.
Make the next conversation specific
Prepare a short brief that identifies the purpose, material if confirmed, available records and planned access. Add one or two questions you want answered, such as which areas need further assessment or how a proposal addresses the original findings. Avoid uploading private policy details or making a whole-home certification claim from partial records. The online passport can organize the information you already know and send it with your follow-up request.
Keep the scope clear
| Part of the project | Ask for | Keep separate |
|---|---|---|
| Wiring identity | Material, circuit type and location | Age or a general home-inspection label |
| Condition | Professional observations and limitations | No reported symptoms |
| Prior work | Invoices and location-specific scope | A verbal promise that everything was done |
| Closeout | Work record and applicable authority documents | Payment of the invoice alone |
Questions to take forward
- Who identified the material?
- Which parts of the installation were described?
- What remains assumed rather than observed?
Common questions
Is aluminum service wiring the same as older aluminum branch wiring?
No. Service and feeder conductors supply larger parts of an installation; branch circuits serve individual loads and outlets. A report should identify which wiring it describes. The word aluminum alone does not define the project.
Can a home’s age confirm aluminum wiring?
No. The mid-1960s through late 1970s are a useful reason to ask about wiring history, but age does not identify the installed material. Renovations and mixed systems make property-specific identification necessary.
